Eight Week Embryo

8 week embryo

A 3-D image looking inside the uterus at a very early pregnancy, (eight weeks after last menstrual period and six weeks after conception). Organ systems (heart, eyes, ears, liver, bowel, etc.) are just forming. The embryo is still dependent on some nutrition from the yolk sac which is still present.

Embryo highlighted

This illustration will help you identify different parts of the embryo. Within the uterine cavity (4) are the yolk sac (1), a round structure containing nutrients and the elongated embryo (2) with the smaller part representing the head (3). Facial features and limbs are not yet formed. Blood vessels are forming and the four chambers of the normal heart are beginning to be recognized.
